White Nights Extra Fine Watercolors

We asked our artists to share works in progress to help students and those just beginning with watercolor get over their fear of the medium.  By seeing how the artists break down seemingly hard subjects into manageable sections, we hope those new in watercolor would get over their apprehensions and start enjoying painting.

Deg begins by drawing his subject directly on the paper.

1

Deg lays down the background first.  By setting the background, he is able to adjust the tone and values better for the main subject.   He reserves the greatest contrast in values for his focal point.

2

"Sawsawan" added and a tomato.

3

Dish would not taste as great without the accompanying tomatoes.

For the tomatoes, Deg employed the use of analogous colors (yellow, orange and red) to create the clean gradations from orange to red inherent in tomatoes.  He layered working from light to dark.   The redness is further enhanced by the contrast of green in the background.

4

Laying down orange as the base for the fishes. He adds brown to suggest the crispy bits and blue to make some parts look golden.

Check out how realistic the salted eggs look.  The shell was achieved using quinacridone magenta mixed with purple and ultramarine blue.

A bit of trivia.

Salted eggs are made by marinating fresh eggs in a very briny solution for several days.  Then they are boiled.  The shell is turned that vivid color by dyeing.  This identifies it as prepared salted eggs to the buying public.  These are good to eat with rice or bread or as accompaniment to many Filipino dishes.

Deg's tips for painting rice. "Use the power of suggestion. Do not render each grain of rice but develop select areas only. A bit of detail here and there would do the trick. Add shadows to bring out some rice grains. I did not use masking fluid here but that can be a good tool to use for defined leaveouts of rice grains. I took extra care shaping the tofu that I added to the rice"

Deg's observation on White Nights:

"The colors are intense.  A little goes a long way.  The colors are bright and the set has a wide range of colors included.  The pan colors are easy to reconstitute with brush and water.  I would recommend this brand."
